I had a nice meal with him and his family at his home and we discussed 'old' times. Coach Humphrey died not many years after that from I believe was an immune disorder like Lupus.

Dad burning pear at the Spence Place. People may have forgotten this. Back in the drough of the 50s there was no grazing on the range for the livestock and most could not afford to feed their cattle for a growing season. The cattle got so hungry that they would eat prickly pear thorns an all. People started burning the thorns of the pear with these pear burners. The tank under dad's arm contains pressurized kerosene. To use it you preheated the head over a fire. When it was hot enough the fire from the burner made it self sustaining. Many people burned pear to make it through those years. I think this period broke dad's spirit. He never was the same after the struggle to keep the livestock healthy during this period. And don't forget, we still had screw worms to deal with. Cows with mouth sores from eating unburned pear would be attacked by the screworms and killed or disfigured if not treated promptly. Tough times.
