Took a little spin throuch the American west. Landed in Vegas on April 13 and left from Vegas May 13. Took in many sites and points of interest (at least to me) that I had not visited before.
A walk up the Pariah River
Took a walk in the bed of the Pariah River. Waded in the water mmost of the way taking pictures of colors and textures in the river and sand and mud bars. Water was only a few inches deep and cooled off my feet on a hot day
Along Kane Creek Road
Kane Creek Road is a scenic drive along Kane Creek near Moab Utah. The road goes from the mouth of the creek at the Colorado River several miles upstream through the canyon and finally to the plateau above. This page highlights the beauty of the canyon walls, vegetation including a nice hanging garden and the road itself. There are a number of rock art panels which are covered on a separate web page.
Antelope Canyon, Page Arizona

Barrel Cactus and Joshua Trees
On a road between Searchlight Nevada and Baker California there is a forest of joshua trees with interspersed Barrel cactus. This is a beautiful little drive. There some fine side roads and some of these pictures ar from those.
Bear River National Wildlife Refuge
Bear River National Wildlife Refuge is located on the Bear River Delta in the Great Salt Lake. It is habitat to a wide range of waterfowl, some resident, some migratory so that there is excellent photo ops year round
Bremerton to Seattle Ferry
This Ferry provides a nice long beautiful ride across the Seattle harbor. The weather was very nice the day I was there. It is a nice big double deck ferry porviding a large lounge area for passengers on the 60 minute ride.
Burney Falls California
Burney Falls was a plesant little side trip. In the spring there was plenty water. And there was a nice little hike that I enjoyed.
Canonville Overlook Utah
Canonville Overlook Utah provides a view of the Canonville valley and badlands. Colorful outcrops are exposed all over the valley. This overlook is several hundred feet above the valley and excellent photos may be taken all round.
Crater Lake
Crater Lake which is the remains of the Mt. Mazama erruption 7000+/- years ago. I caught it this vacation on a sunny clear day in early spring (April). Snow still blocked the highway around the rim of the lake. Made for a beautiful drive up the mountain.
Dayville Oregon
Dayville is a quaint small town in central Oregon. Should of taken more pictures here. It is named after John Day whose claim to faim was being stripped down naked in the wilderness and being released. There is a major river, a major palaeotenology site and some other places named for him.
Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge Utah
Located on the southern extreme of the Great Salt Lake Desert, Fish Springs has been a place of essential importance in meeting the needs of humans and wildlife over the past 10,000 years. Most critical are the life-sustaining waters that make Fish Springs a true oasis in the desert.

Ghost Town Berlin Nevada
Ghost town Berlin Nevada The Berlin Mine had three miles of tunnels, but produced less than $1 million worth of gold and silver during its lifetime. The Diana mine connects to the Berlin Mine at the fourth level and is preserved as a mining museum.
Ghost Town Ione Nevada
Ione came into existence in November, 1863 after silver was discovered by one Mr. P. A. Havens in the Shoshone Range. While most of the mining in the area (the Union Mining District) was closer to communities such as Union and Grantsville, Ione developed as a trade and milling center.
Ghost Town Medena Utah
The settlement was established as a railroad town in 1899 by the Utah and Nevada Railway. By 1905 it was on the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad route between Salt Lake City and Southern California.
Ghost Town Oatman Arizona
Well there a fair number of people live at Oatman Arizona even though it is considered a ghost town. Now most artists live there. Like most ghost towns through the West it was a Gold mining town until that played out which didn't take long. Then it monitized tourism brought by old Route 66. And that failed also.

Hoh Rain Forest - Olympic Peninsula
The Hoh Rainforest is located on the Olympic Peninsula in western Washington state, USA. It is one of the largest temperate rainforests in the U.S. Within Olympic National Park, the forest is protected from commercial exploitation. This includes 24 miles of low elevation forest 394 to 2,493 feet (120 to 760 m) along the Hoh River. The Hoh River valley was formed thousands of years ago by glaciers. Between the park boundary and the Pacific Ocean, 30 mi of river, much of the forest has been logged within the last century, although many pockets of forest remain.
Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge
The Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge is an arch bridge in the United States that spans the Colorado River between the states of Arizona and Nevada. The bridge is located within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area approximately 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Las Vegas, and carries U.S. Route 93 over the Colorado River.
Hurricane Ridge on the Olympic Peninsula
Beautiful day to drive up to Hurricane Ridge on the Olympic Peninsula. Great view of the Olympics. The high road was closed due to snow pack but was still able to drive to the highest point. There was fresh snow. Several cross country skiers were treking over the snow.
Hydrofoils on San Francisco Bay
While walking across the Golden Gate Bridge I notice a variety of hydrofoils and othe watercraft in the bay under the bridge. It was a good clear day and I have a short telephoto lens on the camera and lots of megapixels so I blew up some of the shots here. The hydrofoils are amazing. Some with sails, some with kites.
Ichthyosaurus Museum, Berlin Nevada
The park is home to the most abundant concentration, and largest known remains, of Ichthyosaurs, an ancient marine reptile that swam in a warm ocean that covered central Nevada 225 million years ago. The fossils are protected and displayed at the park’s Fossil House.
John Day Fossil Beds
Paleontologists have been unearthing and studying the fossils in the region since 1864, when Thomas Condon, a missionary and amateur geologist, recognized their importance and made them known globally.
Johnson Canyon, Kanab, Utah
Johnson Canyon Canyon is a beautiful canyon outside Kanab Utah. It exposes some beautiful and tortured profiles in the geology. An then there is that old Gunsmoke TV Set.
Native American Rock Art, Johnson Canyon Road, Kanab Utah
This native American rock art panel is located near Johnson Canyon Road outside Kanab Utah. Interestingly it has amonge other animals a bison.
Native American Rock Art, Kane Creek, Moab, Utah
Kane Creek outside Moab Utah is the location of some excellent examples of Native American rock art. Most panels are near the road and easily accessable. I have included the rock art panels from Moonflower canyon here.
Lake Powell Badlands
The north side of Lake Powell is the south side of the Kaiparowits Plateau. The Plateau ends in eroded cliffs and badlands. The colors and textures and shapes make good photographic subjects. Smokey Mountain Road runs along a broad shelf for several miles before climbint to the top of the plateau on Kelly Grade. Which I highly recommend. But not included on this trip.
Lake Quinault Loop Road - Olympic Peninsula
The Quinault Rain Forest Loop Drive is a 31 mile loop around Lake Quinault, up the Quinault River into the Olympic National Park, and back around the other side. It is a great way to experience the Quinault Valley. There are many opportunities along the way to stop for viewing waterfalls and wildlife, and taking walks, hikes or photographs.
Lick Wash Slot Canyon
Lick Wash is a tributary of the Pariah river near Kanab Utah. There is a nice little slot canyon there that is very accessable. Hope to visit here again. Only explored about a mile of this 4 mile canyon
Mating American Avocets
Mating American Avocets at Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge in the desert of the Great Salt Lake Utah.
Mount Hood, Oregon
At Mount Hood, Oregon I was able to stay in historic Timberline Lodge which is featured on another page. The light was great morning and evening. This was the one mountain I was able to get up on a bit due to the ski lodge.
Mount Rainier, Washington
Pictures taken on the road up to Mount Rainier. The Lodge was totally buried in snow. The road was open a good way up the mountain and the lighting was good. The mountain was beautiful.
Mount Saint Helens
Dropped by Mt StHelens again this year. Didn't have the fog and snow of last year. Got many good pictures and many good view on the way up the mountain. Loved the freshly erroded volcanic ash. Plants are retuning to the damaged area.
Mount Lassen, California
Mt. Lassen is noted for its thermal features. Unfortunately at the time of year I was there most roads around the mountain were snowed in. Took some side road and National Forest roads to get pictures.
Painted Hills of Oregon
Painted Hills is a nice little state park out in the middle of Oregon. It is an area of badlands with soft forms and bands of subtle earth tones. A nice walking park. Nothing spectular, just a nice soft landscape.
Pariah River from Cottonwood Road
Cottonwood Road follows the Pariah River for several miles on its way to Canonviller Utah. This is a beautiful drive on a sunny spring day. The colors in the cliffs, the muds, the sands and in the cactus flowers are all one could ask for.
Native American Rock Art - Moab Golf Course
THe Moab Golf Course Rock Art panels are the location of some of the classic petroglyphs you may nave seen in Southwestern publication of all sort. A nice concentration of some of the best images to be found anywhere.
Ruby Beach, Olympic Peninsula, Washington
Located on the Olympic peninsula, Ruby Beach is a beautiful broad isolated beach. Has lovely tide pools, driftwood, sea birds and what is known as stacks(rock outcroppings on and near the shore). Feels great to have the waves roll in over your toes.
Sandhill Cranes outside Saratoga Wyoming
Outside Saratoga Wyoming I found several groups of Sandhill Cranes. This particular goup was very active and offered many photo opportunities. Lots of interesting interactions between the cranes and I was able to capture some of them. Photo conditions were not optomin. These pictures are crops of pictures taken at a distnace of maybe 60 yards.
The Cockscomb
Cottonwood road along the Cockscomb in Southern Utah between Kanab and Canonville is one of the prettiest yet most accessable in the area.
The Golden Gate Bridge
Had a beautiful day for visiting the Golden Gate Bridge. Walked all the way across and back taking pictures all the way. Several people were riding hydrfoils in the water below. Had a nice overpriced sandwich in the shop on the south end.
Timberline Lodge, Mount Hood, Oregon
Timberline Lodge was built during the Great Depression and employed many unemployed artists and craftsmen. THe Lodge is filled with their work and I have attempted to capture a portion of it here.
Titus Canyon Road into Death Valley National Park
Titus Canyon Road is one of the gread drives of the American West. It is a 30+ mile one way drive through what is at one point a solt canyon for cars. It first goes through another canyon then over a mountain pass and finally into Titus Canyon itself
Tonopah Mining Museum
This little museum has pulled together a good selection of gold and silver hard rock mining to a mine site in Tonopah Nevada. I was there on a day after a sping snow snow so the place and landscape were beautiful.

Yellowstone Spring Snow
Had a nice little Spring snow while I was in Yellowstone National Park. Got a number of pictures of the wild life and landscapes during the snow. All trace was gone by the afternoon.
