Well you need to see this. Wheels on some of the buses used to take tours around Yellowstone are outfitted with these tracks in winter for the winter tours. They replace both the front and rear wheels with these track laying machines. It works pretty well. Really kills gas milage.
The mountain behind Mammoth Hot Springs.
Undine Falls. Almost frozen over but there is still a waterfall behind the ice.
And here is that waterfall. Very few waterfalls fully freeze over.
This picture was shot right out of the window of my rental truck . This old bull was just mozying along on the road from Mammoth to Tower. Buffalo routinely take the roads around Yellowstone. They know they have the right of way. The old bull was not excited. Not in a hurry. Just out on a morning stroll.
A closeup of the bull. He is indifferent to the stinking tourists. I judge him to be a very handsome fellow.
Encounterd this fine elk just before crossing Blacktail Deer Creek. He was grazing on the fir. He is a 7X6. Is in good condition.
Here the big fellow prepares to cross the road.
And the elk gets his close-up. A very fine specimen.
Here he is rooting around in the snow for dry grass.
There were at least 3 elk in this bachelor herd. This one, a 6X6, looks out on the cold scene ahead contemplating the pickings. I like the warm elk against the cold background.
There are two mule deer in this picture.
This buffalo, a young yearling bull, has snow on his face from using his muzzle to brush the snow off the grass underneath.
A small herd. This is mostly cows and calves with the occasional yearling bull. Older bulls form bachelor herds. Note how big the calves are. (second from left is a calve. there are others)
Buffalo herds near Specimen Ridge.
The road. Wind was blowing snow at this point. Remember school kids go this way twice a day. Without whining or wetting the bed.
Looking back at the Lamar River. There is water flowing under the ice here. You can see the road I was on in the right center of the picture.
The Lamar valley. It was just as cold as this picture makes it appear. That is a large herd of buffalo in the middle ground before the cottonwoods.
Mountains to the north of the valley.
