Dinwoody Creek Petroglyphs

All the pictures in this album are currently from just one cliff face by a wash passing through Comb Ridge on the Navajo Reservation. This picture is of the left half and shows a very repatinated panel.

Here is a crop from the previous panel with much Lightroom 'enhancement'. The four large bighorn sheep? are all similar with a slite boat shape long skinny legs and cloven hoves. That one fellow has extremely long legs. Humor? The one to the right appears to have a short leg between the rear legs. This appears to be a mistake that was corrected rather than phallic. There are several small sheep as well. The one at the very center is very similar to the larger sheep, having cloven hoves and a boat like body. The other small sheep near the center do not have cloven hoves are generally less well defined.

The rest of that first picture. Note the two sheep at the upper left. The one in the reah has cloven hoves. Just under this sheep is a man with fingers and toes indicated. Unusual on such a small figure. In the upper center is a sheep with cloven hoves facing to the right. Note the 'foot' with toes indicated on the right. The wavy lines at the lower right are very old. Also there is the fremont like figure in the left of center. It has its hands up and a head dress. Toes are indicated. THis fiture appears to be fairly new. And then there is the obvious modern grafitti.

These two little mountain sheep figures are at the lower left of the original photo and may be overlooked. Note the feet of the long legged sheep just visible at the top of this crop.

Moving on down the rock face. Some very old figures here.

The wavy lines to the left are the same ones from a previous crop repeated here. There is a find boat style sheep in the middle with ball feet. Below him are two feet(bear) with toes indicated. There is the turtle like figure in the lower center. This is very old. More on him later. Note the sawtooth line cutting across the center of the image from the lower left to the spall in the upper center right. Several very old 'wavy' lines on the right side.

Almost overlooked is this figure near the ground. Sort of a Fremont tipe figure. Elaborate head treatment and tapered body and busy hands. Should have gotten closer.

Another crop with the rest of the panel. Ignore the cowboy. There is another turtle like figure in the center. Three toes on each short leg. Some very old geometric lines at the bottom of the panel and a wavy line going up to the right. I find the treatment of the 'turtle' torso interesting. It is defined by some technique other than pecking.

Looking back.

A crop from the previous picture of just the turtle like figure. Note the lower legs are both curved inward with three toes each. A much younger sheep has been superimposed on the torso.
